Just when you think no one’s looking
All the eyes are focused on
What it was I meant to say
In the meaning of a song
What if all I meant to do
Was to clear an open space
In between the page and ink
There was only you
I may see a gold rush
You may see a black cloud
What it is that I see
Isn’t what you see at all
What if all I meant to do
Was to clear an open space
In between the page and ink
There was only you
Let this be learning
That we’re all allowed
To take what we need
And to give what is needed
We will speak of daybreak
We will speak of night fall
I will speak of slowness
To be sure we see it all
All it was I meant to do
Was to clear an open space
In between the page and ink
There was only you

In the quiet afternoon
All alone in her room
All summer long she’d refrain
Nothing lost, nothing gained
There, tried and true
To a fault, much ado
It won’t be long
Until he comes
Being gone for a time
Being gone’s been sublime
They’ll see it through
For he is her muse
She is his, too
Just in the nick of time.

They used to tell me I was building a dream,
And so I followed the mob,
When there was earth to plow, or guns to bear,
I was always there right on the job
They used to tell me I was building a dream,
With peace and glory ahead,
Why should I be standing in line,
Just waiting for bread?
Once I built a railroad, I made it run,
I made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad; now it’s done.
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once I built a tower, up to the sun,
Of brick, and mortar, and lime;
Once I built a tower; now it’s done.
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee-Doodly-dum,
Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,
And I was the kid with the drum!
Say, don't you remember, they called me Al;
It was Al all the time.
Say don’t you remember, I was your pal?
Brother, can you spare a dime?

Kentucky Babe
03:47
|
|
||
Skeeters are a hummin’ on the honeysuckle vine
Sleep Kentucky babe
Sandman is a comin’ to this little babe of mine
Sleep Kentucky babe
The silvery moon is shining in the heavens up above
Bobolink is pining for his little lady love
You are mighty lucky
Babe of old Kentucky
Close your eyes and sleep
Fly away Kentucky babe
Fly away to rest
Lay your little pearly head
On your mama’s breast
Close your eyes in sleep
Daddy’s in the canebreak with his little dog and gun
Sleep Kentucky babe
A possum for your breakfast when your sleeping time is done
Sleep Kentucky babe
The boogeyman will catch you sure unless you close your eyes
Waiting just outside the door to take you by surprise
Best be keeping shady
Little sleepy lady
Close your eyes and sleep

After Midnight
04:50
|
|
||
After midnight in a bungalow
There’s a countdown
To when he’s leaving those
Comrades on the ground
Hardened faces painted green and gold
All that’s missing if the truth be told
Is the will to fight once more
Every thought was of his wife and kids
In an order they would tear apart what once was sound
Family parts leave orphan’s without homes
Back on the ground there were parades
Promises and accolades
Every night he’s with his wife and kids
At home the hero’s having nightmares of all he’s done

Portrait

I’ve seen all kinds of pictures
Most of the beauties of the world
From places I’ve traveled I still recall
This quaint melody as I thrill
Painting my own pictures in tones
I’ve painted all mother earth
Both flowers that brave the mourn
Tones color the light she’s bourne
I’ve tried to paint her beauty
From radiant skies to deep blue seas
The sky as she changes her glamour
Dawns pale blue sunsets amber
The wind and the vein
The lull on the plains
Leaves on the ground
Mountains grey brown
Tipped with a dash of glowing white snow

When all of the house lights are taken down
And all of the people there
That traveled for hundreds of miles around
To hear their songs fill the air
Their beauty, the quiet and heaviness
The shadows they recall
Don’t mean a thing at all
A song would begin with a feeling
That’s had when the melody came
The words are assembled then written
Its meaning is somewhat relayed
On tip toes and reeling through misty eyes
The writing’s on the wall
Don’t mean a thing at all
Before the night gets underway
Your mind could change
What once was true that very day
Is now not the same
And there’s no way she could know
You couldn’t tell her so
The only way to live it was by
Giving it a go
No doubt there’ll be something for everyone
When turning every stone
She can’t leave well enough alone

Willow Weep For Me
06:15
|
|
||
Oh Lord, why did you send the darkness to me?
Are the shadows forever to be
Where’s the light I’m longing to see?
Oh love, once we met by the old willow tree
Now you’ve gone and left nothing to me
Nothing but a sweet memory
Willow weep for me
Bend your branches green
Along the stream that runs to sea
Listen to my plea
Listen willow and weep for me
Gone my lover’s dream
Lovely summer dream
Gone and left me here
To weep my tears into the stream
Sad as I can be
Hear me willow and weep for me
Whisper to the wind
And say that loved has sinned
To leave my heart a breaking
And making a moan
Murmur to the night
To hide her starry light
So none will find me sighing
And crying all alone
Weeping willow tree
Weep in sympathy
Bend your branches down
Along the ground and cover me
When the shadows fall
Bend willow and weep for me

All Day Long She Wrote
04:20
|
|
||
There’s not a question she won’t ask forlorn
Though none of the answers she’s bargained for
All day long
A time for fodder
Then a day to seize
She does what she wants to
She’ll do as she pleases
All day long she wrote
Until her hands were tired
There’s nothing she wouldn’t do or say
Her minds made up
In the meadow for sounding
That’s how it used to be
Their beauty was blinding
As far as the eye could see
All day long she wrote
Though her hands were tied
There’s nothing she wouldn’t do or say
Her minds made up
As for the melody
Its shape is her guide
To trust in it is everything
The waitings for the wise
Her minds made up

Lush Life
03:37
|
|
||
I used to visit all the very gay places
Those come-what-may places
Where one relaxes on the axis
Of the wheel of life
To get the feel of life
From jazz and cocktails
The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces
With distingué traces
That used to be there
You could see where
They'd been washed away
By too many through the day
Twelve o'clock tales
Then you came along
With your siren song
To tempt me to madness
I thought for awhile
That your poignant smile
Was tinged with the sadness
Of a great love for me
Ah, yes, I was wrong
Again, I was wrong
Life is lonely again
And only last year everything seemed so sure
Now life is awful again
A troughful of hearts could only be a bore
A week in Paris could ease the bite of it
All I care is to smile in spite of it
I'll forget you I will
While yet you are still
Burning inside my brain
Romance is mush
Stifling those who strive
I'll live a lush life
In some small dive
And there I'll be
While I rot with the rest
Of those whose lives are lonely, too.

Joey

Joey where did you
Learn to turn your face into a sunny morning?
Bulb with yellow petals round it
Did they tell you I was there collecting bottles
Trying to drink my way up through the rain beside you
Joey
The joy on your face
Got replaced with something dark and unfamiliar
The flower’s now a nomad
Who’s out on the street
Picking through a garbage can and I’ve been wondering
How can I be bad when you’re bad?
Joey
Joey when did you
Learn to turn your eyes into those
Dim twin half moons
I don’t know how you see through them
Did you know that yesterday I idolized you
So then tell me how tonight could I despise you?
Joey
Are you in there?
